Judges/Mentors

Join Us as a Judge for the Virginia Junior Academy of Science Research Symposium  
Saturday, May 22, 2027 • Potomac Shores Middle School• Prince William County Public Schools

Step into a day filled with curiosity, discovery, and the bright spark of young scientific minds. Your experience and perspective can make a real difference for students across Virginia in grades 7–12.

How Judging Works
In-person judges, virtual readers, and virtual special judges are needed for the 2027 VJAS Research Symposium
Virtual Readers, In-Person Judges, and Virtual Special Judges Registration Link
Registration to be a judge or reader is now open. Follow the above link to register.

What You’ll Do
Read and score a set of either middle school or high school student research papers before the symposium using a clear, easy-to-follow rubric
Attend the symposium on May 22 to hear students present their work
​​Complete the final portion of scoring and join a brief discussion with your fellow judges and the student

How the Day Flows
  • Morning check-in and orientation
  • Student presentations every 15 minutes
  • Built-in breaks to recharge
  • Once your section finishes and your scores are submitted, you’re done for the day
